France’s oldest city, medieval churches, Roman remains, 19th century palaces and tiny cottages on hilly streets jostle with huge housing estates, louche cafes and avant-garde architecture. There may be glorious sea views at every turn, but Marseille is proudly, defiantly urban: not a seaside resort out to fleece tourists, but a year-round working city with a lively cultural scene, where you might just happen to join the locals for a swim on the beach.
Marseille was historically the most important trading center in the region and functioned as the main commercial port of the French Empire. Marseille is now France's largest city on the Mediterranean coast and the largest port for commerce, freight and cruise ships. The city held the title of European Capital of Culture in 2013. In 2016, hosted the European Football Championship and become the European Capital of Sport in 2017.
The Vieux Port remains the emotional center of Marseille life, as it has been for the past 26 centuries. It is a favorite place for a stroll, scene of the 14 July fireworks and somewhere for jubilant OM fans to celebrate after a victory. Fashionable bars and avant-garde theaters rub shoulders with ships’ chandlers, while luxury yachts bob alongside the tiny fishing boats that deliver the day’s catch to the market.
In the recent years, thanks to all of that, Marseille regains prestige specially through the media cover and the tourism industry witnesses an explosion of new comers from every where.
Despite this new dynamic in the city, the economy, especially downtown is still fragile. But this is precisely why Marseille international school decided to settle down there.
